Waiting for Mr Right

Happy Birthday Liz,’ Jane and Amanda chorused.

‘Thirty five, it doesn’t seem that long ago we were all in Uni.’

‘I’m really glad we’ve stayed in touch,’ Amanda confided.

‘The Three Amigos’ Jane toasted, ‘may we stick together forever.’

‘Liz, are you still seeing that guy, John or something, the librarian?’

‘No, another one that didn’t quite work out.’

‘You aren’t still trying to find Mr Perfect are you?  The guy would have to be a saint to cover your criteria,’ Jane blurted out then realising that the wine had loosened her tongue.

Amanda came to the rescue, ‘I’m sure Liz knows what she is doing, Jane.’

‘Do you want to talk about it, Liz? We’re here for you if you need us.’

‘Maybe, how long have you got?’

All the girls laughed as one, and their friendship was back on a sure footing.

‘It’s not that I haven’t tried out what’s been on offer.’ Liz said as she started to blush.

‘Tell us more,’ said Jane making herself more comfortable.

‘Well, do you remember Bret, tall and athletic? He seemed like Mr Darcy material to start with, but then I realised that the only person he was in love with was himself.’

‘I could have told you that.’ Jane chipped in.

Amanda glared at her before saying, ‘I remember you telling me about someone called Tom who seemed nice.’

‘Yes, he was nice, all of his other girlfriends he was going out with at the same time thought so too,’ Liz snarled.

‘So, let me get this straight’ interrupted Jane, ‘you’re still expecting to find someone who’s already perfect in every way!  Girl you gotta lower your expectations.’

‘Jane!’ Amanda protested.

‘It’s okay, Amanda, I was coming to that conclusion myself, my biological clock won’t stop for me until I make up my mind.’

‘Thirty five girl, not much breeding time left,’ Jane remarked and poked her tongue out at Amanda.

‘Hasn’t there been anyone at all that you could spend the rest of your life with,’ Amanda said dreamily.

Jane and Liz both sighed at Amanda’s fairy tale outlook on life.

‘What I was trying to say is that Liz could opt for a lesser saint, and have him as an ongoing project?’

‘You mean go for a lower model and bring him up to speed, don’t you?’ Liz laughed at her friend’s audacity.

‘Perhaps you need to list of their pros and cons, and see what you could compromise on,’ suggested Amanda tentatively, ‘that always works for me.’

‘That’s actually not a bad idea.’ Liz said, ‘I’ll get a pen and some paper, could you pour me out some more wine, I think I’m going to need it.’

‘So, the only thing wrong with the Librarian is that he snores in bed!’ Jane laughed.  ‘But so do you, I couldn’t sleep a wink with the racket you made when we were camping.’

‘I still have his number, perhaps I should call him.’
