LAMENT TO THE CHERRY

Three 15 year old boys sipping around a table at the back of a rugby club sipping shandies while talking about girls.

Billy Thomas and his little gang were sitting around a table at the back of the rugby club sipping their shandies.

The steward was keeping a watchful eye, the club was busy after a local derby. Both teams were strutting their stuff to impress the girls. They in turn were pretending they weren’t interested while quietly sizing them up.

The gang looked on from afar. Finally Owen Parry piped up.

”Don’t know why they bother, bitches all of them.”

They nodded as they knew Owen had fallen heavily for a girl, showering her with gifts only for her to turn him down when he asked for a date.

Bryn nodded. ”My Da said if you touch a girl outside marriage, you’ll go to hell when you die. Not worth the risk if you ask me.”

Dai sighed. “When I took Maisie behind the rugby club one Saturday night, I only put my hand up her skirt and bang it was all over.”

They looked on in sympathy as Masie had told all the rugby boys, making him a laughing stock.

Alun the brightest of the group, carried on the conversation. ”I’m not too bothered. When I go to university there will be plenty of girls to choose from. Did go to the library once to look at an anatomy book just to check where things were, if you know what I mean. Miss Jenkins caught me and threw me out, stating I was a disgusting boy. How are we supposed to know these things? Me Da is useless. If I ask any questions, he just mumbles on about the birds and the bees, or ask me Ma.”

Sion nodded. ”I don’t know what all the fuss is about. I mean when you have those dreams that wake you up, it’s all over in seconds, hardly seems worth the effort.”

Billy looked around the table. ”I think there’s plenty of time, we aren’t sixteen yet and I don’t want to end up like my cousin Alf. He had to get married at sixteen, as he got Carys up the duff. No nights out with boys, tied down with a baby.”

Returning to their shandies, each privately wondered what it would be like at the loss of their cherry.
