Rose settled into her nest, another busy night, sighing as she turned to the others.
Lily poked her head up: ‘Hard night Rose. You wouldn’t believe it. I had to rummage under the bed to find the tooth, all those dust bunnies’ bits of food. It was disgusting’.
Marigold piped up: ‘Last time that happened to me there was a mouse there, eyeing me up.’ Gasps from the girls.
Lily shuddered: ‘What did you do?’
‘Chucked a bit of biscuit at it, grabbed the tooth and scarpered.’
Hyacinth joined in. ‘I had a fright not long ago when a dog came sniffing around sucked me halfway up his nostril. Thankfully it tickled his nose, he snorted and blew me across the room,’
Rose replied, ‘Maybe we should ask for danger money?’ Nods all round. Marigold retorted, ‘I was nearly squashed when the child had the tooth in his hand, had to scratch him to let it go. I was reaching for the tooth when his hand closed, trapping me. Luckily I managed to wriggle free.’
‘Why can’t they just put them under their pillow the way it’s always been,’ sighed Rose. ‘Children don’t believe. They have become cynical. I had to sprinkle sleeping dust on one occasion as the girl wouldn’t go to sleep. She had the tooth on her side table.’
Hyacinth agreed: ‘Heard one child asking their parents for more than sixpence as there was inflation to take into account .Dreadful.’
Yawning they agreed it: times were changing. As their flower beds closed they whispered goodnight, to be ready for another busy night.
