Dolfina leapt and twirled, racing back and fro with the other youngsters. Life was good except for the bully Drogo who kept bumping and pushing the little ones. Rushing at him, she angrily thumped him with her tail. Her parents rushed over to separate them.
Nearing maturity, Dofina knew that her behaviour was not acceptable. Her role was to teach the younger ones how to follow the dolphin code but Drogo made her so angry. Listening to her parents, she so wanted them to be proud of her.
Mother explained she would soon find a mate and they would mate for life. Dolphina wasn’t too sure where would she find him.
Months later, when rounding up a shoal of herring, it happened. She was diving into the melee, eating so much her stomach hurt. On her last dive she came nose to nose with a very handsome male. Staring at each other, something happened. They chattered to each other as they speed to the surface leaping high. Now Delphina knew what her mother meant. It felt so right spending their days together, and they got to know each other. Both now wanted to be mates with the blessing of their groups. Next morning they bid their goodbyes and raced off to their happy ever after.
Closing the book, her daughter asleep, Jane gently kissed her cheek. Jane stood smiling, thinking as always of her late mother. Her mother had had a hard life. In her latter years she’d hoped she would come back as a dolphin, as they mated for life. Wistfully Jane hoped that she had had her wish and was now with her mate.
