A Demon’s Perspective

I read a lot, stories mainly, it helps to pass eternity. One idea that regularly catches my attention is the advice that you should always be in charge of your own stories: never let others tell them on your behalf or you will inevitably come out badly. So very true, and excellent advice for we demons who have suffered greatly from such blatant cultural appropriation down the ages.

I mean, you’ve heard the one about the Gadarene swine? Completely Fake News. Where was the demonic voice in that tale? Suppressed, and completely rewritten to make demons look really bad. As well as all those artists like Fuesli, another really atrocious exponent of anti-demon propaganda is Salman Rushdie, who ruthlessly exploits the demonic repertoire for his own profit. It makes me weep the way demons have come to be associated with wickedness.

We are a diverse and highly skilled workforce, fully unionized and with a full spectrum of equalities policies. Our multicultural and multilingual abilities are unparalleled. Despite a long, international and often heroic history, we have been thoroughly undermined over the millennia by the ever-worsening human incapacity to face its own dark side. We are the ultimate scapegoats of the human race, carrying their sins and shame.

A demon has a number of key skills. As dwellers outside time we have no need to hurry. We are able to enter and leave the human form (although, who wants to do that too often?) and we are able to take many forms. Best of all, we can do magic. At times, some of our number have been co opted into doing the devil’s work, but I pass no judgement on this-needs must.

Our glory days go way back to the time of the ancient Greeks who made no links between demons and malevolence. We were all about happiness and lending inspiration to the likes of Socrates and Plato. Even the old-time Egyptians acknowledged our capacity for good works. Really, it was the newer religions which began to drive nails into our reputation as neutral servants of the light. And this must stop.

Our reputation is now in tatters and some amongst our number have thrown in their lot with the Dark Side. For myself, this is not the way I face and my belief is in demonic rehabilitation.

It is for this reason that I have formed the Demons’ Liberation Front. Our members are collecting testimonies and enabling demons to tell their own stories. You may consider this piece an interim manifesto for the DLF, until we are able to collate our material and publish it in greater fullness and depth.

The DLF wishes to reclaim the term ‘demon’ and to restore its former integrity and purpose. To help with this work please ‘like’ our FB page ‘Demons R Us’ or join us on Twitter.

Thank you for your kind and patient attention and may you always be open to supernatural inspiration.
